What “COLLISION INVOLVING SERIOUS BODILY INJURY” means

Texas Transportation Code § 550.021 obligates the operator of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in, or reasonably likely to result in, injury to or death of a person to immediately stop at the scene or as close as possible, or immediately return, determine whether a person is involved and requires aid, remain at the scene, and comply with Texas Transportation Code § 550.023 — giving name, address, registration, and insurance information and rendering reasonable assistance, including transporting or arranging transport of an injured person for medical treatment when treatment is apparently needed or is requested. The offense consists of failing to stop or failing to comply with those requirements. This variant, § 550.021(c)(1)(B), applies when the accident resulted in serious bodily injury — injury that creates a substantial risk of death or causes serious permanent disfigurement or protracted loss or impairment of a bodily member or organ.
